Question: Swimming a bad weight loss activity?
(Posted by: D on 2010-03-13 00:25:36)
I met with a personal trainer a few weeks ago, I told him all I did exercise wise to lose weight was swim. He told me that swimming is not that good for losing weight. I heard it was one of the best exercises but he said its actually one of the biggest myths in exercise. He said cardio and weight training are way better and that swimming doesnt really compare. I didnt buy it until he showed me numerous studies from different universitys and basically said you just dont do as much work and dont burn as many calories because the buoyancy of the water does half the work for you. He said hes a simple example whats heaver 100 pounds in water or 100 pounds on land? So I guess he has a point and the studies clearly showed. Do you agree? |

Your trainer is a nutcase. Swimming is excellent for your general health and for weight loss, especially sustained swimming at an even pace. If your heart rate is up, it will definitely help you lose weight. It's also easier on your joints and allows you to work out your whole body at once. His example is awful as well. It's like asking what weighs more, a pound of rocks or a pound of feathers? Swimming is much more than simply letting the water cushion you, especially if you have a routine that you follow when you're in the pool. |

Drink green tea. Get this: When a recent study compared the metabolic effect of green tea (in extract) with that of a placebo, researchers found that the green-tea drinkers burned about 70 additional calories in a 24-hour period. If you can believe it, those 70 calories a day add up to a total of 7.3 pounds of fat a year! It's not magic, it's science: Researchers believe the difference is caused by metabolism-enhancing antioxidants known as catechins, which are found in great eat. |
